Checks for poisoned possums in Wellington waters

Dog owners are warned to keep their pets away from Wellington beaches until the regional council has checked for possum carcasses poisoned with the pesticide 1080.

The council says heavy rain may have washed possum carcasses poisoned during a recent operation near Upper Hutt down the Hutt River and into Wellington Harbour.

Council spokesperson Murray Kennedy says staff are checking beaches in the region and will check the river once the water levels go down.
