Water thieves hit hydrants

Every year about a million litres of water are stolen from some of the 10,500 fire hydrants across the city, Manukau Water says.
The offenders could be homeowners filling their swimming pools, people working on a construction site or businesses that use water in their processes.

"Whatever you’re putting the water into can actually be sucked back," Mr Reynolds says. And if that’s a business that deals in chemicals that’s a big issue, a real concern. There have been situations in New Zealand and overseas where people have died because of this situation called backflow."
